Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions

コンテンツ

Reduction of GHG Emissions Intensity

The Group is reducing GHG(※1) emissions intensity by raising production efficiency, conserving energy, and using renewable and waste fuels. A target for cutting GHG emissions intensity by FY2020 was set in FY2015.

  • GHG Emissions Intensity Reduction Target
Reduce GHG emission intensity (t-CO2e/production t) in conjunction with product manufacturing by at least 10% compared to the FY2013 level by FY2020.
*Not including GHG emissions from the electric power business and transportation using Group vehicles.
  • Results
The FY2020 reduction target set in FY2018 was achieved and emissions intensity was reduced.
Scope1,2,and 3(※2)results are set forth below.

Energy Consumption and Intensity

In 2018,the Oji Group implemented energy-saving measures that reduced energy consumption by more than 50,000 kL oil (※3)(equivalent to the reduction of more than 100,000 tons of GHG emissions).
In recent years, the Group’s energy consumption is increasing slightly, in part reflecting facility expansion and enhancement for higher product quality and added-value, but energy consumption and intensity has been declining. We will continue to save energy in an uncompromising manner.

Use of Non-Fossil Fuels

Since 1980, we have been using non-fossil fuels. In 1980, the fossil fuel ratio was 71.9%. However, fuel conversion has been promoted through the installation of waste boilers and efforts to improve the yield of black liquor renewable fuel and in 2018 the fossil fuel ratio reached 33.3%.

3. Measures against climate change problems

The Oji Group measures the financial impact of GHG emissions by using carbon pricing and promotes measures for raising awareness of the climate change problem and the reduction of GHG emissions among all officers and employees.

The Environmental Management Department of Oji Holdings is currently undertaking verifications by assuming two internal carbon prices, which are, \5,000 and \10,000 per 1 ton of CO2*. Assuming that the carbon pricing is applied to the entire Group, the Department calculates the level of financial impact that Japan’s goal of reducing 80% by 2050 will have on Group companies, and provides information to related people and organizations. In addition, the Environmental Management Department delivers to domestic and overseas Group companies information related to the climate change problem and the reduction of GHG emissions in the monthly environmental news to ensure that all officers and employees of the Group thoroughly understand the importance of the measures against climate change problems.

4. Contribution to reducing GHG emissions

The Oji Group has been conducting hydropower generation business since the Meiji Period (1868 to 1912). In recent years, we have been working proactively on improving power generation efficiency through the revamp of hydroelectric power plants and also on biomass power generation, with which we help power producers reduce GHG emissions.
